Installing A Cooker Hood Filter

A cooker hood filter is a necessary part of a kitchen hood as it removes the grease and other particles from the air in the kitchen. The kitchen hood comes with two types of systems for venting the smoke, vapors, heat and gases like carbon monoxide which are build up as a result of combustion out from the kitchen and supply it with filtered or fresh air.

In the ductal system, there are exhaust fans installed inside the duct of the cooker hood, which suck in air and moisture from the cooking area of the kitchen and force it out of the house into the open air.

In contrast, in the recirculation system, there are filters installed inside the hood which perform the function of gathering and blocking vapors, oil, grease, smoke and fumes arising from the cooking area. When all the impurities from the kitchen air are blocked, the filtered air is released back into the kitchen. It is really important that the cooker hood filter is of good quality otherwise traces of impurities and moisture will be sent back into the kitchen which can be harmful for the health of the cooks.

The most efficient types of cooker hood filters include carbon, grease and charcoal filters. The cooker hood grease filter come in the form of aluminum and metal wires arranged in the form of a mesh. The metal mesh serves to trap grease, oil, smoke, moisture and other impurities from the kitchen air and then the carbon or charcoal filters allow clean air to pass through it, leaving the impurities to stay behind on the mesh. The charcoal filters are much powerful than the carbon filters.

One of the issues which arise with the filters for cooker hoods is that after a month or two the filters become clogged with debris and their capability to filter kitchen air is inhibited. This means that the kitchen hood filters requires cleaning or replacement. The filters can be easily cleaned by soaking them in a tub containing detergent dissolved in warm water for few hours. Then a brush or soft cloth is rubbed on the metal mesh. As a result, the debris comes off easily, leaving the mesh clean and shining. After a few washes, the existing filters should be replaced with new ones as regular cleaning slows down the filtering ability.

The kitchen hood filters can be purchased from any kitchen accessories store or from Amazon on the Internet. The filters are inexpensive and fall below the price of US$20.
